POINT CLEAR,, AL Philip Francis Cala, Sr., age 91, a native of Pittsburgh, PA and resident of Point Clear, died October 17, 2012 at the William F. Green Veterans Home. He earned his barber’s license after high school and worked in his father’s barber shop for some years. Phil entered the Army during World War II, was chosen for Officers Candidate School and soon became a First Lt. While stationed in Paris during the war where he was in charge of a medical ambulance unit, he met Evelyn Cather, an Army nurse. They were married in Sorre Bouerg,, France on April 2, 1945. Phil and Evelyn were assigned to the 57th Field Hospital serving in the European Theater. They had been married for 63 years when Evelyn passed away June 20, 2008. He started and operated Mobile Valve and Fitting Co. in 1970, where it remained in business for 30 years. An avid golfer he spent his retirement in his golf cart with the fairway out the back door. He is survived by his son Philip F. Cala, Jr., daughters Annette Young and Phyllis Tate, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette and Covenant Hospice of Daphne. They took remarkable care of him in a tender loving manner which comforted him in every way. He felt safe, secure, and loved with all of these people and there aren’t enough words to express the family’s gratitude and love for these fine people. The family will have private services.
