MILLER LILLIAN Joseph Clyde Miller, 71, passed away at his home in Lillian, Alabama on Monday, September 14, 2015, with his warrior spirit fighting his illness to the end. Born October 4, 1943, in Pensacola, Florida, Joe attended Pensacola High School and went on to receive an engineering degree from Auburn University. Upon graduation from Auburn, he was employed as a Research and Development Engineer with Bibb Manufacturing Company in Macon, Georgia. He moved on to Monsanto in Greenwood, South Carolina where he was a Product Technology Engineer until 1971 when he and his wife Marilyn seized the opportunity to buy a business franchise and move to Baldwin County. They opened the first Sears Catalog Merchant Store in Foley, Alabama, and owned and operated the business for twenty-two years. Joe was an owner and developer of the original water slide park in Gulf Shores on the site of what know is Waterville. He also designed and built several homes and commercial buildings in the area. At the time of his death, Joe and son Jim were partners in Miller Home Inspection. Joe served for many years in the Army National Guard in units in Pensacola, FL., Greenwood, SC, and Foley, AL. Preceded in death by his parents Katherine Martin Miller and Thomas Clyde Miller and his brother Thomas Corbett Miller. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Marilyn Darby Miller, daughter Alecia (John) Shaughnessy of Castle Rock, Colorado, son Jim (Amy) Miller of Foley, grandson and fishing buddy Rowan Shaughnessy, granddaughter Ashley Fletcher, sisters Dianne Michael of Sarasota, FL., and Kathy Bowker of Princeton, NJ., brother Jeff Miller of Pensacola and many other relatives and friends. Joe Miller was a good son, good brother, wonderful husband, amazing father, terrific “Pop”, and good friend to many. His goal throughout his life was to live in such a way that when he was gone, he would simply be remembered as a good man. A memorial service will be held from Wolfe- Bayview Funeral Home, Foley, Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to memorial service.
