BAY MINETTE, AL George Wesley Thompson Jr. (Tommy) was born in Garden City Florida on October 28th 1923 to George and Callie Rose Thompson, and passed away on November 3rd, 2015. He was a former resident Bay Minette. Tommy was raised in Florida with his siblings Gerald H. Thompson Sr. (Sunny), Mildred Kirkland and James (Jimmy) Thompson. As a young man Tommy served in the U.S. Navy as a combat engineer in 1945 and was very proud of his service. His son and grand children have fond memories of Tommy sharing with them his presence on Iwo Jima and the reality of what it means to serve your country. Throughout Tommy’s life he was known for his love of adventure spanning the realms of hunting and fishing to his love of travel and passion for race car driving. Perhaps one of his greatest adventures was in starting his own Business with only a second grade education and no money of his own to truly bring to the table. Through a great amount of effort and fortitude Tommy was able to build a thriving and successful automotive and machine shop business known as Thompson Automotive and Machine, founded in 1956.Although Tommy worked very hard to make the business a success he was always one to acknowledge that he had a lot of help and a lot of luck along the way. Tommy and his family were proud of what he had done and the legacy and work ethic it leaves behind. Tommy was happily married to Vera Thompson who preceded him in death. Tommy had a dear companion in Ms. Kitty Street, who remained his faithful and loving friend to the end. Tommy is survived by his son, George W. Thompson III; grandchildren George W. Thompson IV, Tommie Lynn Cummings, Dorothy Thompson Savage: great grandchildren, Abigail Cummings, Merideth Busby, Ethan Cummings, Jacob Busby and Honor Savage. Tommy is also survived by his siblings Mildred Kirkland and James Thompson. Tommy was loved and will be missed by his remaining family and dear friends.
