Alfred Joseph Currier

March 16, 2024

Alfred Joseph Currier, a resident of Silverhill, Alabama, passed away on March 16, 2024 at the age of 95. He was born in Orford, New Hampshire on September 18, 1928, and grew up on his family’s Mt. Cube Farm, which became known for its maple sugaring operation.

At the age of 21 he moved to Connecticut where he worked until about 1951 when his pursuit of a warmer climate brought him to Baldwin County, Alabama and the Eastern Shore of Mobile, Bay. In Point Clear he met what was to be the love of his life, Rosalie Pose, and six months after meeting they were married and built their first home in Barnwell. Rosalie’s large family welcomed Alfred and quickly introduced him to the art of harvesting seafood from Mobile Bay by cast net, flounder gig, and shrimp trawl, and of course the phenomena of the Jubilee. Alfred enjoyed gardening, whether raising fruits and vegetables or ornamentals, and well into his nineties could be seen on his riding lawn mower, or operating a string trimmer with one hand while holding onto his walker with the other.  He found much joy in his family and the many accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In his early years in Baldwin County he worked on the grounds and golf course at the Grand Hotel, then for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, which was associated with Auburn University, where he earned several awards. He then managed a large dairy farm in Loxley for 5 years before moving to Bear Point in 1973 so he could manage a grocery store in Gulf Shores for 13 years when that area still had a small town atmosphere. He and his wife moved in 1991 to their current home in Silverhill. His final employment was as a manager of Carport Auto Parts, which was later purchased by Advance Auto Parts, where he frequently received recognition for his hard work. He retired from that company at the age of 83.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Weston Currier and Victoria Downing Currier, three brothers, Norman J. Currier, Wesley L. Currier, and John D. Currier, daughter-in-law Summer Steward Currier, great granddaughter Kristen Reign Wilcox, and great grandson William Noah Byrd. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Rosalie Pose Currier, a brother, Albert W. Currier, sister Ellen C. (Harry) Pugliese, sister-in-law Fran (John) Currier, brother-in-law Emanuel Pose, his 4 children: Donna (Rusty) Gilheart, Rose (Wayne) Doubrava, John (Audrey) Currier, and Joseph Currier, 10 grandchildren: Jennifer (Brad) Byrd, Timothy (Sara) Gilheart, Stephanie Sinclair, Amanda (Joseph) Koehler, Brian Doubrava, Salem (James)  Boots, Navar (Elese) Currier, Vada (Dominic) Burnett, Hannah (Floyd) Caywood, Tallen Currier, and 16 great grandchildren: Connor (Rosalyn) Byrd, Gabby Wilcox, Karley Neese, Luke Byrd, Kenny Koehler, Wesley Gilheart, Joey Koehler, Addison Doubrava, Ella Kulicka, Lenox Boots, Clara Burnett, Aiden Caywood, Lexa Caywood, Ezra Boots., Waylon Miller, and Allison Miller.
