Alphonse "LaMoyne" Grass, a devoted commercial fisherman and a man known for his kindness, generosity, and steadfast faith, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026. Born on October 17, 1934, LaMoyne lived a life deeply connected to the waters of the Bon Secour River, dedicating his entire working life to the trade he cherished.

From a young age, LaMoyne left formal schooling to pursue his calling as a local fisherman. Over the years, his passion and dedication led him to own and operate his fishing boat, the Mary La Fran—a testament to his hard work and commitment to his craft. His proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly the stewardship of his beloved vessel, which was both his livelihood and his pride.

LaMoyne was a simple man who found joy in simple pleasures. He deeply loved the Lord, his family, and friends. Nothing delighted him more than sharing stories of his experiences on the river, recalling the people who shaped his life. His favorite music was a reflection of his soul: church hymns that echoed his faith, and the timeless melodies of old-time country legends such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and George Jones. He relished good food and good company, always valuing the warmth of friendship and family.

A man of integrity, LaMoyne was known to all as kind, honest, truthful, and generous. His compassion extended especially toward children and those in need, often offering financial support when he could. Through his faith, he lived simply and did good unto others, embodying the principles he cherished.

LaMoyne passed away in the wood-frame house on the south side of the Bon Secour River, the very place where he worked and made his home throughout his life. After spending several weeks at a local rehabilitation facility, he returned home to transition peacefully from his earthly life to his heavenly home.

He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Mary Ruth Burnes and Cecelia Davis, and brother-in-law Cos Davis. He also leaves behind cherished nephews and nieces: Nathan and Diane Davis, Kristen and Steven Slack, as well as his great niece and nephews, Anna Katherine Davis, Walker Davis, Alec Slack, and Jake Slack. Their presence was a source of joy for LaMoyne, who treasured family deeply.

LaMoyne was preceded in death by his baby sister, Barbra Grass; his mother, Mary Esther Steiner Grass; his father, Alphonse Joseph Grass; and his brother-in-law, Luke Burnes.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate Alphonse "LaMoyne" Grass’s life will be held on June 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Oyster Bay Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 4280 Plash Road in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Alphonse "LaMoyne" Grass’s legacy is one of humble strength, unwavering faith, and generous love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever remain a blessing in their hearts.
