Anita Bolton Mitchell passed away on May 12, 2026.

Anita “Anne” Eleanor Bolton was born on May 21, 1945, in Mobile, Alabama. She was the youngest child of Henry Edgar Bolton and Constance Saunders Bolton. Anne was named after her mother’s sister Anita Edwards.

Anne grew up in Theodore, Alabama and graduated from Theodore High School in 1963. She went on to attend Auburn University where she met her husband James “Jim” Fred Mitchell, Jr. She graduated in 1968 with a degree in Medical Technology. Anne did her internship at Columbus Medical Hospital in Columbus, Georgia in 1968 -1969.

On May 21, 1968, Anne and Jim eloped to marry at the Infantry Chapel at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Anne returned home to Theodore after her internship to live until her husband returned from Vietnam. Anne and Jim’s family resided in several places to include Brewton, Alabama; Monroeville, Alabama; Jay, Florida; Montgomery, Alabama; New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Auburn and Foley, Alabama.

James Fred Mitchell, III was born on May 12, 1969. Douglas Bolton Mitchell followed on May 27, 1970, and Jesse Benjamin Mitchell on January 13, 1976.

Anne worked at various hospitals and retired from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University.

The Mitchell Family moved to Auburn, Alabama in 1988 and remained for sixteen years before retiring and relocating to Foley, Alabama in 2004.

Anne enjoyed spending time with family, eating oysters and flounder, and making the best pound cake. She had a green thumb which kept their home filled with beautiful plants and their yard with seasonal flowers. Anne and Jim frequently traveled to New Orleans where they enjoyed delicious local food, plantation and garden tours, shopping, and taking in the sites.

Anne is survived by her husband of 58 years, James Fred Mitchell, Jr, sons James Fred Mitchell, III (Joy), Douglas Bolton Mitchell (Holly), and Jesse Benjamin Mitchell (Amanda), grandchildren Constance Cary Mitchell, Olivia Brantley Mitchell, Emory Anne Mitchell, Quinn Saunders Mitchell, and Clara Jane Mitchell, and her brother Edward Edgar Bolton (Phyllis). She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Saunders Bolton.

A celebration of life will be held in Auburn, Alabama at a later time.
