Barbara Jean Gutierrez

Barbara Deans, 77, of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, following complications from heart surgery.

Born in Cororooke, Australia, Barbara was one of seven children of Robert and Florence Deans. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Alan and Jim, and is survived by siblings Laurie (Joy) of Geelong, Bob of Melbourne, Graeme of Clifton Springs, and Faye of Colac.

Barbara trained as a nurse in Melbourne, where she worked in medical research and surgery before traveling to Europe and marrying a gentleman from Alabama in Sicily. She later settled in Fairhope, where she continued her nursing career for more than 40 years, serving in surgery and the ER at Thomas Hospital with skill and calm under pressure.

She was known for her wit, humor, and remarkable memory, as well as her love of flowers, knitting, baking, calligraphy, and selecting thoughtful treasures for friends. A true “shop local” supporter, she especially cherished the people at Fairhope Pharmacy and her favorite downtown shops and cafés. Barbara was a favorite patient of Dr. Brian Dearing and was deeply grateful for the kindness of Jennifer Robertson, Head of Nursing at Cardiology Associates, along with her many devoted caregivers, physicians, and friends.

Barbara honored others by arranging for trees to be planted in Fairhope for friends who passed before her, and she supported causes close to her heart, including the Arbor Day Foundation, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Audubon Society.

She will be remembered for her generosity, loyalty, humor, and the beauty she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
