Captain John Chason Gray, age 87, died peacefully on February 20, 2023 surrounded by family following a brief illness. John was born in Mobile, Alabama and graduated from Murphy High School and the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He led a distinguished military career, serving in the United States Navy, Army, and Merchant Marine. John’s career continued on the water, working as a Mobile Bar Pilot. Many will remember John for being an avid outdoorsman, and could be found hunting or fishing from the woods of Loxley to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. John was also a member of several Mobile mystical organizations and enjoyed viewing parades from the Athelstan Club. John was proceeded in death by his father, Judge Sidney Johnston Gray, mother, Ina Marie Chason Gray, brother, Dr. Sidney Johnston Gray, Jr., and sister, Marcia Gray Weinacker. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Linda Ann Davis Gray; his four daughters, Melissa Gray Russell (Daryl), Lisa Gray Hartley, Karen Gray Brock (Chris), Michelle Gray Bowman (Matt); his seven grandchildren: Jacob Gray Hartley, Taylor Joseph Hartley, John Christopher Brock, Jr., Ann Chason Brock, Julia Gray Russell, Sidney Gray Bowman, Kathryn Hill Bowman; and a blessing of cousins and extended family. A private burial service was held on February 24, 2023 at Montrose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Montrose Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 98 Montrose, AL 36559, or your favorite charity.
