David Allan Powers, M.Div., D.Min., 1938-2025; Husband, father, priest, band director, veteran.
We are proud to remember and celebrate the life of the Reverend Dr. David Allan Powers this Tuesday, September 16, 2025, with a funeral service at 4:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in Mobile, Alabama, reception to follow. David A. Powers was the second of three sons to Edward Odom Powers and Frances Rhoda Powers, born in Reading, PA, and raised with older brother Edward (Sonny) and younger brother Richard in Savannah and Tifton, Georgia. David was a bass fiddle and tuba player who earned a B.S. in Education from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University). He played with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra before being drafted into the U.S. Army and seeing active combat as a helicopter mechanic and door gunner in Vietnam with the 114th Assault Helicopter Division, Delta Battalion, 1963-64.
He returned to become a middle and high school band director at schools in South Georgia before being called to serve as an Episcopal priest. He earned his Master of Divinity (while also directing the University of the South band) and later his Doctorate of Ministry from St. Luke’s Seminary in Sewanee, TN. He was ordained in 1974 and served in his life’s true calling as a parish priest at churches across Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama for over forty years.
He is survived by his wife, retired business communications professor Mary Celeste Powers, his four children, their spouses and two grandchildren: Mark Stanfield (wife Shelly Stanfield and daughter Sarah Stanfield), David Powers (wife Amy Chasanov and son Hersh Powers), Heather Powers, and Jonathan Powers (wife Melissa Dinwiddie). He said he was most proud of his family and was dearly beloved by us and the many people whose lives he touched in his ministry. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to All Saints Episcopal Church in Mobile, AL, specifying the Food Share program, or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Daphne, AL.
