Mr. David Ames Saunders Sr, 89, a resident of Gulf Shores, Alabama, passed away Monday January 15th, 2024 at South Baldwin Medical Center in Foley, AL.


David was born in Starkville, MS to the late Wilburn Russell and Altie Reynolds Saunders. He was a founding and active member of St. Andrew by the Sea church in Gulf Shores and devoted much of his time and his passion to serving in the church choir. He was an avid community volunteer and served faithfully at the Christian Service Center in Gulf Shores. David was a graduate of Mississippi State and served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the US Army from 1955-57. He served an additional 30 years with the US Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He joined the US army Civilian Personnel Office in 1962 and he worked in offices in Hawaii, Tennessee, Japan, Georgia and Panama before retiring in 1994 to Gulf Shores. David was active in performing and music throughout his life and brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. He was an amazing friend who along with his beloved Anne made life-long friends wherever they lived.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Anne Newell Saunders also of Starkville; by his daughter Debbra Fowler and by his three siblings, Wilburn Saunders Jr, Grosie Heath Holland and Altie Patterson.


He is survived by his son David Saunders Jr, (Sally) his grandchildren, Cris Fowler, Jennifer Took (Daniel), Jordan Casey (Zac), and Regan Saunders; his great grandchildren, Ava, Stella and Ezra Took and many other loving relatives and friends.


A celebration of David’s life will be held at St. Andrew by the Sea church in Gulf Shores on Saturday, January 27th at 1:00pm. Interment will follow in the Memorial Garden.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to: Christian Service Center or to the music program at St. Andrew by the Sea church
