Debra Fay Pollard Merritt, age 71, of Bay Minette, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 17, 1954, Debra was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who devoted her life to caring for her family and community. Known for her warm heart and generous spirit, Debra found joy in cooking, with her gumbo being a favorite among all who knew her. Her culinary talents brought comfort and happiness to family gatherings and friends alike.
Debra’s dedication extended beyond her home; she worked as a Nurses Aid, offering compassionate care to those in need, and later as a bartender, where her friendly nature made her a beloved presence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Franklin and Genevieve Blackmon Pollard, and her sister, Sandra Turberville.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Donald Merritt of Bay Minette; her two sons, Jesse (Angelia) Van Atta of Bay Minette and Jonathan (Keri Lynn) Van Atta of Mobile; her six grandchildren, Jaden, Judah, Caleb, Harleigh, Carter, and Amelia; and her great-grandson, Louie; Uncle Lawrence (Joan) Blackmon; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Spanish Fort on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private.
Debra’s lasting legacy is one of love, kindness, and the warmth she brought to all who were fortunate to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
