Dorothy "Dot" Edwards McClure

Dorothy “Dot” Jean Edwards McClure, 94, of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026, after a brief illness.

Dot was born on November 5, 1931, in Sturgis, Mississippi, the daughter of John Ernest and Ercel Woodson Edwards. She graduated from Ackerman High School in 1949.

Dot married James “Jim” Calvin McClure on October 2, 1949. They were happily married, celebrating over 60 years of marriage, until Jim’s death in 2010.

Dot and Jim were also known to many as “BG”, short for Blessed Grandmother, and “Gran”. They provided child care for their grandson, Christian McClure, while his parents, Steve and Susan, worked in Mobile for many years. Christian had a very special relationship with his “BG and Gran” that many of us today would be fortunate to have experienced.

In her later life, Dot enjoyed playing bridge at the Nix Center and reading books to Christian’s kindergarten and elementary school classes. She was very active in the classroom and enjoyed entertaining Christian and his friends in her home after school.

Dot and Jim were members of The Fairhope United Methodist Church, where Dot taught Sunday School. Dot and Jim also enjoyed membership and were active participants at various local organizations such as The Cotillion, The Revelers, The Christmas Knights and Knighties, and the Fairhope Yacht Club.

Remaining to cherish Dot’s memory are her only child, James Steven “Steve” McClure; her daughter-in-law, Susan Allegri McClure; her grandchild, Christian Walker McClure; and her sister Ann Edwards Bush; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding Dot in death are her husband, Jim McClure; parents, Ernest and Ercel Woodson Edwards; and her sister Bobbie Edwards Love.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of the Memory Care Unit at The Reserve at Fairhope. Dot lived out the last year of her life there and was treated wonderfully. The staff interaction, facilities, and activities exceeded our expectations at every turn. In addition, we would like to thank the ACG Hospice staff who made the last few weeks of Dot’s life comfortable and dignified.

A graveside ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 am at the Memory Gardens of Fairhope, on October 16, 2026.

Join us for a Celebration of Life, which will be held that afternoon at the Fairhope Yacht Club from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Ann Pearson Legacy Fund, care of the Fairhope United Methodist Church. https://www.fairhopeumc.org
