Dwight Benton

Dwight Benton, cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, and Vietnam War Veteran, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his life, Andrea. Born on October 19, 1948, in Athens, Tennessee. Dwight was the beloved son of Roy and Frances Benton. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roy Benton Jr.

Dwight's life was a testament to dedication and love. He shared a beautiful marriage with Andrea, whom he wed on February 14, 1990. Together, they built a family filled with warmth and laughter. Dwight is survived by his loving wife Andrea Benton, his four devoted children: Gary Benton and his wife Pam, Crystal Johnson and her husband Sammy, Chris Higginbotham and his wife Suzanne, and Deborah Burrell. He was a proud grandfather to Kaden, Gaven, Taylor, Devin, JT, Zach, Kathryn, and Tommy, and a doting great-grandfather to Kalani, Leai, Kali, Liam, Mi'kel, Jaylon, Beorn, Gemma, Rohan, Trey, Faith, and Eve. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Phyllis O'Daniel, and her husband Reed, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and close friends.

After graduating from high school, Dwight served his country with honor in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service was recognized by his acceptance as a member of The American Legion, most recently as a member of Post 0199 in Fairhope, Alabama.

Dwight's working life was characterized by his unwavering dedication to supporting his family. He was known for his hard work and the joy he brought to those around him. A man of varied interests, Dwight found solace and happiness in nature and music. An avid fisherman, he spent countless days enjoying the Alabama Gulf Coast, and he fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing and establishing Persimmon Creek Camp to pursue his love for hunting. His passion for the Tennessee Volunteers was unmatched, and he spent many Saturdays cheering on his team. Gifted with musical talent, Dwight played multiple instruments, including guitar, piano, and drums, sharing his love for music with everyone he met.

With his striking blue eyes and an immense heart, Dwight had a unique ability to make everyone feel like family, never meeting a stranger. His warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A service will be held at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Special Spaces Chattanooga, an organization close to Dwight's heart.

Dwight's legacy lives on through the love he shared with his family and friends, and the memories they will cherish forever. His presence will be dearly missed, but his spirit will remain with us always. GO BIG ORANGE!
