Elizabeth “Betsy” Hunter Coleman passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, surrounded by loved ones during the final days of her life.
Born in Mobile, Alabama, on August 27, 1945, she later made her home in Fairhope, a town she deeply loved and helped shape through her eye for beauty, design, and transformation. She was known for her talent in real estate and design and for the lasting mark she left on the homes, buildings, and people around her. Her creativity and vision contributed to the charm and character of the community she treasured. Her work was featured in local publications, and she was recognized by the City of Fairhope for her many contributions to the beautification and enhancement of the city.
More than anything, she will be remembered for the way she loved — wholeheartedly, fiercely, and without hesitation. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth and generosity touched countless lives. Her children were the center of her world, and she created a childhood for them filled with love, laughter, comfort, and unwavering support. Through every joy and every heartbreak life brought, she remained steadfast for the people she loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Lanier Coleman; her mother, Elizabeth Hempstead McAdams; her father, Langdon McAdams; and her son, Gavin Warren Hunter Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine “Kit” Hempstead Hunter; her cherished grandson, Gavin Warren Wright; her stepsons, Benjamin F. Coleman, Hunter L. Coleman, and Stephen “Neil” Coleman; her sister, Ann McAdams Grady; her niece, Elizabeth R. Gaillard; her nephew, Ronald W. Weldon; and many dear friends and extended family members who will miss her deeply.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew her.
The family wishes to thank her caregivers for their love and compassion over the past year and especially in recent days.
A memorial service will be held at St James Episcopal Church, Monday, June 8th, 2026, at 10:00am.
The family will have a private burial in Montrose Cemetery.
