George Douglas Cunningham

George Douglas Cunningham, Jr., a native of Mobile, Alabama and resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday December 17, 2024, at the age of 74.

He is survived by his wife Robin Cunningham of Fairhope, AL; his son, Louis George Cunningham of Port Washington, NY; his brother Martin Cunningham (Randolph); nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hetty Lyon Horst Cunningham and George Douglas Cunningham, his sister Hetty Lyon Cunningham Newell and his nephew Lyon Cunningham Newell. 

He worked for the family business, N.D. Cunningham and Company, a custom brokerage house and freight forwarding firm, for nearly 50 years.

George was a longtime member of the Fairhope Yacht Club, Athelstan Club and the Infant Mystics.

As an avid outdoorsman, he was happiest with a rod in his hand or calling up a turkey.

Singleton Hunting Club held a special place in his heart. Spear fishing and diving in Belize were also favorite pursuits, especially aboard his boat the Shady Lady.

George truly cherished his numerous friendships many of which spanned decades.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Weeks Bay Estuarine Reserve.

A memorial will be held on February 1st at 2:00pm at the Fairhope Yacht Club.
