Gloria Underwood Anthony

d. April 29, 2024

Fairhope

Gloria Underwood Anthony passed away peacefully in the early hours of April 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Gloria was born in LaGrange, Georgia on July 21, 1939, and was raised in Fairhope, Alabama, where she lived most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Mildred Underwood, her son, Michael Benjamin Anthony, her husband, James Anthony Jr, and her longtime friend, Carol Jernigan. She is survived by her two daughters, Belinda Job (Michael) and Nanette Peturis (Joe), three grandchildren, Eric Christopher (Ashley), Amanda Blackmon (Blake), Kileigh Peturis, and five great-grandchildren, Mason Christopher, Adison Christopher, Jaelynn Chestang, Huntlynn Christopher and Chandler Blackmon. She is also survived by her twin sisters, Dianne Freeman (Rich) and Suzanne Walker (Jimmy), her sister, Judy Garcia, her cousin, Jeanette Jones (Rodney), her sister-in-law, Marie Osborne (Terry), and many other family members and friends.

Gloria, or “Glo,” as she was known by many, or Memommie/Memom as she was known by her grandchildren and all of their friends, loved music and dancing (her New Years Eve parties were legendary and she always looked forward to Mardi Gras), and she was an exceptionally talented painter though most people did not know this. She loved the outdoors and was always up for an adventure whether it was a camping trip, nature excursion, volunteering in the community, participating in church functions, working in her yard, or cutting the fields with the tractor. But most importantly, she loved spending time with her family. Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday, and nothing made her happier than to spend days preparing a feast for a house filled with 25-30 family members and friends.

She could always be counted on to have a fresh pot of coffee and cookies ready for anyone who happened to walk through her door. Gloria’s kitchen table was always a place of refuge, love, and understanding for anyone who passed through.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Community Hospice, The Brennity at Daphne Memory Care, Eastern Shore Rehabilitation and Health, and Rosinton Community Church for the kindness and care shown to Gloria and her family.

Services will be held Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Wolfe Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope, Alabama.  Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 am with a Chapel Service at 11:00 followed by a graveside service in Memory Gardens in Fairhope.

Because Gloria was so full of life and always the life of every party, the family requests everyone dress comfortably and in happy colors.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Children’s of Alabama Foundation designated to Nephrology & Dialysis Departments (childrensal.org/foundation) in honor of her great-grandson, Chandler; to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or to an organization of your choice.
