It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved and remarkable man, Henry George Bergman, Sr., he passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 at the age of 86. He was a kind, generous and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be forever remembered for leaving a legacy of love, kindness and selflessness always lending a hand to anyone in need. We are all fortunate to have known him.
He was born on January 17, 1938 in Foley, Alabama to Albert W. Bergman and Joanna Strehle Bergman. He is predeceased in passing by both of his parents, Albert and Joanna as well as his sister, Florence (Flossie) Bergman Rutherford and brother, Albert Bergman.
Henry enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956 after graduating from high school and served on two different Navy destroyer ships during his active duty service. Afterwards, he served for two more years in the Navy reserves. In 1962, Henry married and had three children, Johanna Estelle (Stella) Bergman, Henry (Hank) George Bergman, Jr. and Mary Judith Diana Bergman, whom he is survived by as well as daughter-in-law, Tanya Donati, granddaughter, Samantha Lafhameyer, great-grandson, Rhett Thrash, two siblings, sister Kathy Bergman Hamrick ,brother William (Bill) Bergman and numerous extended family members.
Henry trained as a boiler inspector in the United States Navy and had a long career as such for Kemper Insurance Company, the state of Mississippi and Arise Corporation before retiring in 2012. He enjoyed and was very proud of his work as a boiler inspector for over 50 years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, travelling and music.
Henry was a faithful member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Elberta, Alabama as well as Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Clinton, Mississippi where he worshipped Our Lord and Savior and volunteered for church activities and events.
Henry was a devoted and loving family man instilling in his children the legacy of love, sacrifice and a never-ending devotion to the well-being of others. He will be greatly missed by his family and anyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. As we grieve his loss, may we celebrate the beautiful life and memory of such a wonderful person. His spirit and memory will live on in the hearts of his family. May his legacy inspire us to carry forward his legacy of love and compassion for others.
A memorial service to celebrate and honor his life will be held at Wolfe Bayview Funeral Home in Foley Alabama on September 21, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Internment will follow in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetary in Elberta, Alabama. To honor Henry's memory, donations, in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
