Herbert O`Neal Pierce, known affectionately as Herb, passed away peacefully at his home in Fairhope, Alabama, on June 11, 2026. Born on November 3, 1924, in Clanton, Alabama, Herb led a life marked by dedication, love, and unwavering commitment to his family, faith, and country.

Herb’s early years were shaped by a deep connection to music, having played the guitar as a teenager alongside the legendary Hank Williams. His service to his nation was equally distinguished; as a World War II veteran, Herb proudly served in both the Army and Air Force, seeing duty in France, Germany, and Belgium. His sacrifice and courage during this challenging time remained a defining aspect of his character.

Following his military service, Herb found his true passion behind the wheel. He was a truck driver until the age of 80 and owned Dari Delite in Dublin, Georgia for several years before establishing Herb’s in Fairhope, Alabama. Eventually, he returned to the open road, a life he truly loved. Together with his beloved wife, Ruth Holland Pierce, he traversed all 48 continental states as well as Canada and Mexico, carrying loads and sharing countless moments on their journeys.

Herb’s steadfast devotion to God was a cornerstone of his life. As a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope, he embraced his faith with humility and grace. Equally cherished were his family and friends. He was a good man, known for his funny sense of humor and generous spirit. He often spent as many hours as possible with his children, always placing their needs above his own, a testament to his selfless nature.

Herb is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Holland Pierce; his children and their spouses: Ken Pierce and Lee, Brenda Lagle and Mike, Shirley Robertson and David, Cynthia Loyd and Charles, Greg Pierce and Debra, Mark Pierce, Ricky Wolfe Pierce, and Scott Wolfe Pierce and Karen; his half-sister Shirley Newberry Owens; 20 treasured grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and an extraordinary 36 great-great-grandchildren. His family was without question his proudest accomplishment, and his legacy lives on through each of them.

He also leaves behind memories that brought laughter and joy to those around him, including his infamous public performance of the "T Berry Shuffle," much to the horror and amusement of his family. Such moments capture the essence of Herb’s playful spirit and endearing personality.

Preceding him in death were his father, Clyde Pierce; his mother, Josephine Goodson Pierce; and 14 siblings, whose memories he carried with him through the years.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate Herb’s life will be held on June 22, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m., at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, located at 34904 AL-225, Spanish Fort, Alabama 36577.

Herbert Oneal Pierce’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and resilience. He will be remembered fondly for his sacrifices, his humor, his unwavering faith, and above all, his boundless devotion to family. His presence will be deeply missed but eternally cherished by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers please support Wounded Warriors charities.
