James Monroe Buford, III

James Monroe Buford III, 83, passed away peacefully July 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Monroe was affectionately known as “Chief” by all. Monroe was born May 20, 1943, in Baton Rouge, LA to James Monroe Buford, Jr. and Veronica McCurnin Buford. He was a graduate of Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge and Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He grew up with a lifelong love of LSU football, and carried that passion with him throughout his life.

Above all, Monroe cherished his family. They were the center of his life. He found his greatest joy in the time spent with those he loved. His devotion, steady presence, and love for his family will be remembered always.

Monroe is survived by his wife Sue, daughter Staci Hand (Tom), grandson Perry Albert Hand II, sister Janelle Buford (Bob Hill), sister-in-law Martha Oubre (Darwin), nephew Radley Savoie, niece Jennifer Usner (Brian), and nephew Jacob Oubre (Allison).

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson James Monroe Hand (J-Roe), who passed away the same day as his grandfather. Their passing is a profound sorrow to their families, and they will be remembered with love.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026, at St. Andrew by the Sea, Gulf Shores, AL at 11:00 am. Family and friends are invited.

Monroe leaves behind a legacy of Love, Humor, and Compassion that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
