James P. Nix, Sr.

Mayor James P. Nix, Sr., a beloved member of the Fairhope community, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025 surrounded by family, at the age of 88. Born on July 31, 1937, in Robertsdale, Alabama, he lived a life marked by dedication to his family and community.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Margaret Meyers Nix. James was a proud father to three children: Vicky (Mike) Cook, Phil (Molly) Nix, and Susan (Gene) Tillman. His legacy of love extends to his six grandchildren: Amber (Buck) Clukey, Hailey (Thomas) Gulledge, Stacy (Thomas) Hines, Rachel (George) Ladd, Stephen (Andrea) Nix, and Sarah (Chris) Jennings. Additionally, he took joy in the company of his nine great-grandchildren, and his brother Nolan (Janet) Nix.

Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Anne Peele DeLorme Nix, whose memory he carried with him throughout his life.

Jim sat on the Fairhope City Council from 1968-1972 before serving seven consecutive terms as Mayor of Fairhope from 1972-2000. He was the visionary for the beautification of The City of Fairhope. He served as Chairman for the Board of Trustees for the University of South Alabama as well as the President of the League of Municipalities for Alabama. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of many other service organizations. He was also long time member of The First Baptist Church.  

Friends and community members are invited to pay their respects during the visitation service, which will be held at the James P. Nix Center in Fairhope, Alabama, on October 18, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Following the visitation, a funeral service will commence at 12:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the University of South Alabama, the Parkinson's Foundation, or the Michael J.Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
