Jane Marie Mooney

Jane Marie Mooney, 62, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2024. Jane spent her final days in her home looking out over the Bay of the Holy Spirit, cared for by her husband John and her daughter Claire.

Jane had an innate love for learning. After completing her Batchelor’s degree in Agriculture in Guatemala, and her Doctorate in Spanish Colonial Women’s Literature at the University of Alabama, she went on to share this love of learning by guiding, mentoring and teaching a multitude of students, many with both academic and personal struggles, for the remainder of her life. 

She was a Parishioner at both St. Lawrence & Christ the King during her many years residing in Fairhope and her weekly slot in the Adoration Chapel was held faithfully by her for over a decade. This is where she would meet with God and her Librarian guardian angel.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Mooney, and Maria Theresa del Carmen de Mooney; and sister Rosemarie Aguel.

Jane is survived by her husband John Anthony Bongiorno of Fairhope, AL; daughter, Claire Von Zimmerman of San Clemente, CA (Matthew); brother, Dan Mooney (Gaby) and their children Patrick, Peter, Phillip, and Paul all of Guatemala; brother-in-law, Carlos Aguel and his children, Daniel Aguel (Ana) and Esteban Aguel (Emily) of Columbia; brother, Thomas Mooney (Carmen) and their children, Sabastian and Katina of Guatemala, along with many other loving relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Jane’s life will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 11:00AM. 

Interment will follow at St. Lawrence’s Columbarium.

To honor Jane’s memory, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fr. Martin Irudayanathan who will forward those donations to the Heralds of Good News Divine Mercy Province in India, (his order).
