Jean Nelson

Jean Nelson (Jeanie) was born in Los Angeles, California on September 1, 1934, to parents Ester and Douglas Best.

She was very talented and worked a variety of jobs. She was the executive secretary for a president of Barclays Bank. Later she worked for what is now Aviso Accounting Group in Foley for a number of years. Of course, Jean did all the bookkeeping for their family companies and rental properties, in addition to accounting, invoices, property management, tax returns, and many other duties too numerous to mention.

Jean was one of the first ever female telephone cable splicers in Baldwin County. For many years she supervised three other female employees splicing cable to expand telephone service all over the county. Jean also had a green thumb and loved doing yard work and gardening. One year Jim asked her what she wanted for her birthday. She replied, "A wheelbarrow!".

She is survived by her husband of 49 years Jim Nelson, three children - Joan Wynia~ Patricia Rager and Mathew Christensen and two stepchildren - Paulia Watkins and Jim Nelson, Jr. along with many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families. Preceding her in death was daughter Diane Boston and mother Ester Inez Osborn. Jean died on August 30th at home surrounded by family and friends. She also held special memories for beloved friend and caretaker Dorothy Hillery who helped her in the last years of her life.

Her Celebration of Life service will be on September 27, 2025 at 1 pm at Josephine Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Mashburn officiating.
