Fairhope

Jennifer Hammock DeLoach, 81, peacefully passed away at her home in Fairhope, AL, surrounded by her family, nearly two weeks after suffering a stroke. “Jennie” was born in Savannah, Georgia on April 20, 1944, to the late Clifford E. Hammock and Mary Rushing Hammock.

She attended H.V. Jenkins High School, where she was a cheerleader and the May Sway Queen, and continued to Armstrong College in Savannah. At age 19, Jennie married Stephen (Steve) James DeLoach, also from Savannah, on December 29, 1963. Upon graduation from Navy Officer Training in June of 1964, Steve and Jennie began a lifetime of travel to naval duty stations around the world. Their travels took them from Newport, RI to San Diego, CA, Athens, GA, Norfolk, VA, Jacksonville, FL, Charleston, SC, Mechanicsburg, PA, Washington, DC, Pensacola, FL, and even a tour in Tehran, Iran.

They completed their family with the birth of son, Jason, born in 1969 and daughter, Lisa, in 1974. Jennie was a dutiful Navy wife and shipmate as they moved their family 21 times during their lives together. In every new community, Jennie found her home on a tennis court and enjoyed years of tennis leagues and friendships. She was the PTA mom, biggest cheerleader, and constant taxi driver to her children’s activities. Her favorite role, however, was Nana to her 5 grandchildren. Among Jennie’s favorite times were over 20 years of beach weeks at Tybee Island, GA, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and extended family. Crab boils and card games became cherished memories. Jennie and Steve moved back to the Pensacola area in 2012, and then on to Fairhope, AL in 2021 and spent the next years attending her grandchildren’s sports, church, and school events, never turning down the chance to watch the kids while their parents traveled.

Her loving family will always remember Nana’s love of jigsaw and crossword puzzles, but especially her love (or obsession) for McDonald’s sweet tea.

Jennie is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, Steve; children, Jason (Shelley) DeLoach of Roswell, GA; Lisa (McLean) Trotter of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren Matthew and Rachel DeLoach, and Patten, MayMay and Stephen Trotter. She is also survived by her sister Donna (Hodges) Golson of Atlanta, GA.

A Celebration of Life for Jennie will be held at Baytreat, 18249 Scenic Highway 98, Fairhope, AL on Saturday, October 18 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to the American Heart Association. www.heart.org
