John (J.W.) William Gray, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away Sunday, August 17,2025, at the age of 84.
Mr. Gray (J.W.) was born in Robertsdale, Alabama and was a graduate of Robertsdale High School before serving our country in the United States Army. He was active combat in the Vietnam War. As a Private First Class E3 (of United States Army , Troop B., 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry) he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with VALOR.
Following his service in the US Army, he was a co-owner of the Phillips 66 in Fairhope, Alabama.
J.W. went on to work in the carpentry-woodworking trade. He was employed over 30 years Mr. Angelo Allegri and then by his son, Angelo (Andy) J. Allegri, Jr. Outside of work, he enjoyed watching NASCAR. J.W. also loved drag racing (his 1968 Camaro) at Atmore Dragway and competing (his 1970 Cutless D/stock automatic) in NHRA competition.
Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Gray and Lydia Gray; and his brother, Tommy Gray.
He is survived by his sisters, Betty G. Passet and Margaret Chavis.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 25th, 2025, at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope from 5:00-7:00pm.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at the Alabama State Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Spanish Fort , AL
