John Heustis King, Jr., a lifelong resident of Fairhope, Alabama, was born on August 12, 1987, and passed away on June 29, 2026, at the age of 38.
He is survived by his parents, Dr. John Heustis King, Sr. and Judy Parker King; his three siblings, Solita C. King (Josh), Aloyis King Dodd (Cory), and Charlie A. King; his beloved nephews, David “Paul” Dodd II and John Heustis Dodd; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends; his beloved mentor, Pete Blohme; and his cherished work family at Panini Pete's, all of whom will forever honor and cherish his memory.
John was a true free spirit with an adventurous soul. He was independent, kindhearted, and full of life. He embraced each day with curiosity and generosity. Whether he was setting off on a new adventure or simply spending time with those he loved, John lived life with his whole heart.
For more than 15 years, John proudly worked at Panini Pete's, where he became one of the restaurant's longest-tenured employees. His dedication, strong work ethic, and genuine care for both his coworkers and guests made him an irreplaceable member of the Panini Pete's family. He was deeply grateful for the guidance and friendship of his mentor, Pete Blohme, and was honored in 2022 with the Alabama Restaurant & Hospitality Association's Stars of the Industry Award after being nominated by his manager, Cheryl Blohme, in recognition of his outstanding commitment and service.
John found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved growing peppers and tomatoes, cooking for family and friends, boating, fishing, exploring new places, and riding his bike along the bay on Mobile Street in Fairhope. He took tremendous pride in his home and yard, always finding satisfaction in keeping both beautiful. He was known for planning the perfect gifts, sometimes months in advance, quietly paying attention throughout the year to what the people he loved needed or would enjoy most. Few things brought him greater happiness than seeing someone light up after opening a thoughtfully chosen gift.
Music was one of John's greatest passions. He especially loved Widespread Panic and treasured traveling to concerts with his sister, Solita, and his longtime best friend, Sam Baxter. Those adventures, filled with music, laughter, and unforgettable memories, were among his happiest moments.
John also cherished caring for his beloved German Shepherd, Stella, who was his faithful companion for many years.
Even in death, John's generous spirit continued to give. As an organ donor, he became a hero, saving several lives through the gift of organ donation. His legacy of compassion and selflessness will continue to live on in the families forever changed by his incredible gift.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his adventurous spirit, generous heart, unwavering kindness, and the joy he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him. His family encourages everyone to honor his memory by embracing life fully: seek adventure, try something new, dance even if no one else is dancing, share a meal with someone you love, and never miss an opportunity to tell people what they mean to you. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that this is not goodbye forever, but only until we meet again in heaven.
