John Edward Nelson

John Edward Nelson, 85, a native of Mobile, AL, and a long-time resident of Fairhope, AL, passed away August 8th, 2026. He is preceded in death by his parents, James E. Nelson and Imogene Bulter Nelson, and his brother, Bobby L. Nelson. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Evans Nelson, son Jonathan Fabbretta Nelson (Christy), daughter Regina Nelson Florey (JEF) and his brother Larry Nelson (Virgina). He was known as "Poppy" by his beloved grandchildren Mary Ann Florey, Cecilia Florey, Jonathan Nelson Jr., Sophia Nelson.

John graduated from Murphy High School in 1959, cherishing the life-long friends he made and enjoyed staying in contact with his fellow Murphy class. After high school, he went on to graduate from Livingston College. John and Mary Ann founded the original Mary Ann's Deli in the early 80's. There, many of their customers became dear friends. John enjoyed hosting and attending parties, where he was known to tell humorous stories over a few cocktails. Even through the details to the same story would change over the years, the tales would still bring a roar of laughter.

John loved Fairhope and Fairhope loved him back. Many hold memories of John strolling through town with his grandchildren while running his morning errands, always with a flair for style and an engaging story. He was fondly known as "The Mayor of De La Mare", a title which he took on with great pride. He watched as Fairhope grew and was honored to be a part of it.

He lived a life of faith and was a devoted member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. A memorial mass will be held September 11th, 2026 at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
