Laurie Dyas Chunn

Laurie Dyas Chunn, 59, of Spanish Fort, Alabama, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, made her final transition gracefully and peacefully on September 6, 2025, with her family by her side.

Laurie was born on August 2, 1966, in Durham, North Carolina, to Dr. Edmund Covington Dyas, IV, and Diane LeCorgne Dyas. She attended Auburn University and the University of South Alabama, and she graduated with a BS in Early Childhood Education. While attending college, she met her husband, Lee Brian Chunn, to whom she was married for more than 40 years, and with whom she had three wonderful children.

Laurie was an early childhood education teacher for more than 25 years. Her greatest joy in her career came from being a kindergarten teacher and helping young students learn how to read, find their individualized artistic skills, and find enjoyment in attending school. She began her career at Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile. She then taught at Oakdale Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, Perdido Elementary School, and Delta Elementary School in Baldwin County, and she finished her career at Rockwell Elementary School in Spanish Fort. She worked tirelessly to make her classroom a pleasant and comfortable experience for all of her students, and she spread her grace at every turn.

Her skills and passion as an educator, role model, and mentor extended well beyond her classroom. She never passed up the opportunity to share with children, and many adults, her cooking and baking skills, and she loved learning and teaching all aspects of gardening and caring for her beloved orchids and day lilies.

Laurie was predeceased by her father, Dr. Edmund Convinton Dyas, IV, and her infant niece, Sarah Grace Dyas. She is survived by her husband and greatest admirer, Lee Brian Chunn, and her children, Reilly Dyas Chunn and his wife, Kayla Sullivan Chunn, Collin Lanning Chunn, and Trevor Covington Chunn. She is also survived by her mother Diane LeCorgne Dyas, and her siblings: Edmund Covington Dyas, V (Heather), Katherine Dyas Watts (David) and David Lyle Dyas (Katie), as well as her sisters-in-law: Sherri Chunn Goodman (Troy) and Deleah Chunn Beisel (Tim) and nieces and nephews: Edmund Covington Dyas, Faith Dyas Wilson (Collier), Lauren Covington Watts, Lane Elizabeth Watts, Penelope Jane Dyas, Evie Cosette Dyas, Hendrix Ignatius Dyas, Astraea Odette Dyas, Claire Elise Goodman, Ruby Grace Goodman and Cameron Torrence Beisel.

Laurie greatly loved all of her family and her many friends, many of whom she considered to be part of her family.

Visitation will be Monday, September 15, 2025, at 10:00 A.M, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Catholic Church in Spanish Fort. A reception to celebrate Laurie’s life will be held immediately following the mass.

Her family members wish to extend their gratitude to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Ravin Ratan and his team for the excellent care and support provided to Laurie and her family during her journey. We also extend our gratitude to Community Hospice, Alyssa Chrone, Dr. Daniel Cameron and his staff, and Dr. Craig Dowden.

In lieu of flowers, Laurie and her family would request that donations be made to the  University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute
