Leslie Mark Browning, known simply as Mark to most and affectionately as Papa G to those closest to him, passed away on July 5, 2026 at the age of 67.
Born on March 11, 1959, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mark lived a life defined by creativity, curiosity, and an unwavering belief that every challenge presented an opportunity. While "Papa G" began as a playful nickname—short for "Papa Grande," a nod to his larger-than-life stature—it came to represent something far more meaningful. Mark was larger than life not only in size, but in heart, generosity, and the love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, James C. Browning Sr., and by his beloved mother, Sherry Hatcher Walker, with whom he shared an especially close and cherished bond. Her love, encouragement, and influence helped shape the compassionate, creative, and generous man he became. Though their time together on earth had ended, there is comfort in imagining their joyful reunion.
In 2024, Mark married the love of his life, Sharon, in a ceremony that perfectly reflected who they were. After years of insisting they would never get married, they surprised family and friends by exchanging vows during the annual Mystic Order of the Gators balcony parade during Mardi Gras. It was joyful, unexpected, and unforgettable—just like the two of them.
Long before they married, Mark had become a beloved part of Sharon's family. He loved her children—Damian, Stephanie, and Matt—as if they were his own, offering them the same encouragement, humor, and unwavering support that defined every relationship in his life. He cherished watching their families grow and took great pride in celebrating their accomplishments and sharing in life's milestones. Damian and his wife, Kristen, are the proud parents of Carter and Cooper. Stephanie is the mother of Jack. Matt and his wife, Christen, are the parents of Justin and Connor.
Mark was previously married to Joyce Browning. He is also survived by his son, Chip, who, while technically his stepson from that marriage, was every bit his son in every way that mattered. Their relationship was built on unconditional love, trust, and friendship. Chip and his wife, Susanne Kennedy, continue Mark's legacy alongside their children, Bella and Thomas, who adored their Papa G.
He is also survived by his brother, James C. "Jim" Browning Jr., and Jim's wife, Leslie McQueen Browning; his brother, Kevin Browning, and Kevin's spouse, Tedman Lee.
An artist at heart, Mark possessed a remarkable ability to see possibility where others saw obstacles. His artistic talent was evident from an early age, even earning his high school diploma by painting a mural in the school cafeteria. Throughout his life, he explored countless creative outlets, including painting, clay sculpture, chalk and charcoal, and, in recent years, photography. His photographs were displayed locally, and today his artwork hangs proudly in the homes of family and friends—a daily reminder of the beauty he found in ordinary moments.
Professionally, Mark began his career in surveying and drafting. When computer-aided design emerged in the mid-1980s, he immediately recognized its potential, becoming an early CAD specialist and even teaching training classes from his home in Baton Rouge. After moving to Daphne, Alabama, in 1988 to join an engineering firm, he once again saw the future before most others. His interests shifted toward computer networking and information technology, launching a career that evolved alongside the rapid pace of technological innovation.
His passion for technology reached beyond the workplace. Shortly after moving into the family's new home in 1988, Mark installed a Token Ring computer network throughout the house—a remarkable accomplishment for its time and a glimpse into the future he could already envision. He had a rare gift for blending technology with creativity, bringing warmth, artistry, and humanity into a world often defined only by zeros and ones.
Yet, for all of his artistic talent and technical brilliance, Mark's greatest gift was the way he believed in people. He had an extraordinary ability to see potential in others long before they saw it in themselves. He didn't simply offer advice—he instilled confidence. He encouraged people to take chances, to trust themselves, and to pursue paths they might never have considered without his gentle nudge. He had a way of making those around him feel more capable, more courageous, and more willing to embrace the unknown.
He taught by doing, often pushing those he loved just beyond the edge of their comfort zones because he knew they were capable of more than they believed. Bella will always remember being recruited into chauffeur duty as she learned to drive—not because it was convenient, but because Papa G saw it as another opportunity to help her gain confidence and independence. Those moments, sometimes challenging in the moment, became lasting lessons in self-reliance and quiet courage.
Mark's legacy is measured not only by the art he created or the technology he mastered, but by the lives he shaped. He left people stronger than he found them. He inspired creativity, rewarded curiosity, celebrated individuality, and gave others the confidence to become the very best versions of themselves. He had an infectious enthusiasm for learning, an unwavering generosity with his time and knowledge, and a sincere joy in watching others succeed.
His greatest masterpiece, however, was the family he loved so deeply. Whether known as Mark, Dad, or Papa G, he leaves behind a legacy of imagination, innovation, kindness, courage, and unconditional love that will continue through every life he touched.
The world is a little less colorful without Papa G, but the confidence he inspired, the creativity he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on in the family and friends fortunate enough to have known him.
