Loretta Price Scruggs

Mrs. Loretta Price Scruggs of Orange Beach, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on September 4, 2026, following a courageous 10-month battle with brain cancer.

Loretta was born on March 2, 1954, in Mobile, Alabama, where she lived for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ray Price and Mary Ruth Clayton Price, and her sister, Linda Ruth Price.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Norman Scruggs; her sons, Jason (Amanda) Scruggs and Jeffrey (Molly) Scruggs; her daughter, Bonnie (Scott) Shelly; and her sisters, Louise Beech and Mary Lee Pettus.

Loretta especially cherished her grandchildren: Allison Kate Scruggs, Hudson Blake Scruggs, Reece Bryan Scruggs, Sarah Grace Shelly, Hannah Faith Shelly, Trey Neal Shelly, and Taylor Price Shelly. She also held dear her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends, many of whom remained faithfully by her side throughout her life.

Loretta graduated from Baker High School in 1972 and from the University of South Alabama in 1976 with a degree in education. She later earned her master’s degree from the University of South Alabama in 1989. She spent many years as a beloved teacher at the Arnold School in Mobile, where she touched the lives of countless students and developed lasting friendships with teachers and staff.

In 2014, Loretta and Norman moved to Orange Beach, where she quickly became an active and valued member of her community. She was involved in the Ono Island Ladies Club, Bible Study Group, Garden Club, and Bon Temps Cabrix Mardi Gras Crew. She especially enjoyed playing bridge and other games with her friends, as well as attending the many parties, gatherings, and dinners hosted by the groups she loved.

Loretta was a strong Christian who placed her trust in Jesus Christ at a young age. Her faith never wavered, even throughout the difficult final 10 months of her life. She had a deep and unwavering assurance of where she would go after death, and she lived her life guided by her Christian values, her love for others, and her faith. Her kindness, warmth, and friendship were a blessing to all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the service following immediately at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will take place at Springhill Memorial Gardens in Mobile, Alabama, with a graveside service at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Airport Boulevard Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama; Mobile ARC (MARC); or Mitchell Cancer Institute in Mobile, Alabama.

Loretta will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, former students, and all whose lives she touched. Her faith, love, laughter, and friendship will remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
