Lt. Col. Christopher William Welch, a distinguished veteran and devoted family man, passed away peacefully in his home in Fairhope, Alabama, on August 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on November 22, 1936, in Maryland, he dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving his country in the Army, culminating in a commendable 25-year career, during which he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After his military service, Christopher embarked on a new chapter as a professor at the Medical College of Georgia. His academic contributions reflected not only his dedication to education but also his vast knowledge in fields he pursued throughout his life. He earned a Master's degree in Theology, Nursing, and Education, along with a Doctorate in Philosophy, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning and intellectual growth.
Beyond his professional achievements, Christopher was known for his humility and his extensive volunteer work within his church community. He approached life with kindness and a gentle spirit, leaving an enduring impact on those fortunate enough to know him.
Christopher is survived by his beloved wife, Ruthanne Welch; his daughter, Kateri O'Connor, and her husband Preston O'Connor; his granddaughter, Margaret O'Connor; and his two sons, Sean Welch and Derek Welch and Staci Welch (granddaughter). He will be missed dearly by his family, who were a central part of his life and who cherished every moment spent together.
A visitation will be held on September 2, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, located at 370 South Section Street, Fairhope, Alabama. This will be followed by a Mass at the church, beginning at 11:00 AM, and culminating with a burial service at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama, at 2:00 PM.
As we remember Lt. Col. Christopher William Welch, we honor a life marked by service, dedication, and love, both to his country and to his family. In lieu of flowers please donate to Christ the King Catholic School or St. Michael High School in Christopher Welch's name.
