Marvin James Hopf, a longtime resident of Battles Wharf, Alabama on Mobile Bay, passed away on October 14, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 93 years old. Born on February 6, 1932, he and his wife, Ann Ingersoll Koop Hopf, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on August 27, 2025. They were married at Sacred Heart Chapel, located just a short distance down the beach from where they lived for 70 years.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Ann, and their five children, Margaret Ann, Mike (Melinda), Becky, Joe (Joanna) and John (Amy) Hopf as well as their grandchildren, Tom Hopf (Caytlin), Michelle Hopf, Lee Hopf (Kaitlin) and Bill Hopf; Collin Hopf, Evan Hopf (Rachel) and Landon Hopf; Zane and Kaya Hopf; Sandy Duckworth (Justin) and Tim Tucker; and great-grandchildren Marvin and Warren Hopf; Foster Hopf; Hazel Hopf; Lilly Duckworth; Jackson Tucker, and twins Emily and Lucy Tucker. He also leaves behind two extremely spoiled boxers, Solomon and Stella, and a Siamese cat, Simone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Cecelia Hopf of Jasper, Indiana.

Marvin was born at home in Jasper, Indiana where he was a member of Jasper High School’s state championship basketball team in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician (AT3). After his Navy service, he briefly attended Purdue University before moving to Alabama, and, five kids later and a full-time job, returned to college on the GI Bill and earned his associate’s degree. He worked for the Department of Defense at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile and Pensacola Naval Air Station, and, in between, as a news photojournalist and studio photographer for WALA TV in Mobile.

He met his future wife, Ann, in 1954 when he was stationed in the Navy as an AT in Pensacola, Fla. He married the Auburn student in 1955. The newlyweds started life in West Lafayette, Indiana, then moved to Alabama where the transplanted Yankee happily pursued a life on Mobile Bay that included boating, swimming, crabbing, herding five kids, raising boxers and a Doctor Dolittle-sized assortment of pets and him officially declaring himself a Southerner.
