Mary Sue Dollins

Mary Sue Sherrod Dollins of Lillian, Alabama passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026 at the age of 90. She was born on December 6, 1935 in Piper, Alabama. At the time of her death, she was widowed from William Edward “Buddy” Dollins, to whom she had been married for 67 years until the time of his passing.

After spending her childhood in and around Uniontown and Demopolis, Alabama, Sue took classes at Livingston State Teachers College. She married Buddy, who was already in the US Air Force, in 1958. They spent time in Wichita Falls, Texas before Buddy was stationed in the Washington, DC area where they lived, except for a brief stint in the Philippines, for the rest of his time in the Air Force.

A loving wife and mother, Sue worked as an administrative assistant at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC before staying home to raise their children, Valerie and Bill. In the late 1970s, she returned to the workforce as a civilian employee of the US Navy in Suitland, Maryland. She built a successful career, advancing from administrative assistant to a contracting officer before retiring in the mid 1990s. After retirement, she and Buddy moved from their longtime home in Charlotte Hall, Maryland to Farnham, Virginia before permanently relocating to Lillian, Alabama in recent years.

Sue avidly enjoyed sewing and crocheting and she was a talented quilter, making quilts for family and friends after her retirement. She also enjoyed traveling around the country with Buddy in their RV. Sue was also an avid reader and imparted a love of reading to her children.

Sue is survived by her children; Valerie Bowen (Jim Lindsey) and Bill Dollins (Muriel); sisters Kathy Sherrod and Debbie Bailey; brother Ed Key (Sharon), grandchildren Alex Bowen (Shyla Gibson), Aidan Dollins (Victoria), Riley Fournier (Issac); and her great-granddaughters, Abigail and Charlotte. She is predeceased by her husband, Buddy and her brothers Ben and Fred.

A graveside service will be held at a time and location to be announced.
