Mary Bartelme Murphy

August 29, 1941 — May 17, 2024

Spanish Fort

Mary Bartelme Murphy passed away Friday, May 17, 2024, at the age of 82. A memorial mass will be held in her honor at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 29 at Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Catholic Church in Spanish Fort, Alabama.

Born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, August 29, 1941, Mary grew up around the many lakes and became an avid water lover.  She and her brothers even performed water skiing shows on the Mississippi and Hudson rivers.  Her other love was reading. Mary swam and read books until her last days.

While visiting her brother at West Point, Mary met another Cadet, Vincent Edward Murphy, from Winchester, Massachusetts.   That was the beginning of a 60-year life Voyage together. They married in 1964 in the chapel at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and had three daughters, all born on different military bases.  They traveled the country, first with the military and then with Scott Paper. Later, they were able to travel the world together.

Mary devoted her life to her family, friends, and others in the community.  She had many talents, including sewing, embroidery, crafts, and cooking.  She shared her talents generously with her family and others.  When Vin was deployed to Vietnam, she made gifts and sent supplies for the Vietnamese children.  Her most remarkable talent was making others happy with her warm smile and laugh. She was an amazing friend, neighbor, mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Mary was gracious, kind, and giving till her last day.

Mary is survived by her adoring husband, Vin Murphy, and their grateful daughters, Linda Pond, Debbie Sims, and Kathy Norton.  Additionally, she is loved by her grandchildren Ashton Pond, Daniel Pond, Connor Norton, Katie Karpenko, Caroline Solomon, Madison Sims, and Molly Sims, as well as great-grandchildren Grace Pond and James Karpenko.  Mary will also be greatly missed by her three siblings, Peggy Gustason, Jim Bartelme, and Jane Dezart.  She has now been reunited with her brother Mickey Bartelme.
