Maxie Theodore Patton, age 78, of Gulf Shores, AL, passed away August 10, 2023 at home surrounded by family. Max, as he was known by most, was born June 15, 1945 at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was raised in Reform, AL and Mobile, AL where he attended University Military School (now known as UMS – Wright) graduating class of 1963. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama class of 1967. At UA, Max was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. At both UMS and UA he made dear lifelong friends including his beautiful sweetheart, Betty Lou Byrd, who he married while at UA. After graduating in Accounting, Max moved his family to Houston, TX and began a long career in accounting, real estate finance and development. He and Betty were active members of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, serving on the BBQ committee for over 25 years. Max was also an active member of the Houston Golf Association, serving on committees for the long running PGA Tour event, The Houston Open. He was a member of the Urban Land Institute and The Knights of Babylon Crewe in New Orleans. In 2008 Max and Betty moved to Gulf Shores, AL and began semi-retirement nearer the coastal sunsets and stargazing that he loved. Max is predeceased by his parents: Theodore and Mozelle Windle Patton. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Lou Byrd Patton and sons, Michael Patton (Sandra) of Houston, TX and Jason Patton (his caregiver the past few years) of Gulf Shores, AL. His sisters, Susan Patton Inghram (Darren), Sally Patton Kizzire Ellis (Gary), Maryjane Patton Kennedy (Jim) and many nieces and nephews. As a huge Parrothead, He loved Jimmy Buffet’s song, He Went to Paris line: Jimmy, some of it’s magic some of it’s traffic, but I had a good life all the way. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the CCA (Coastal Conservation Association), Nick’s Kids or the charity of your choice. There will be no funeral or memorial services at this time. There may or may not be a memorial service in the Spring (TBD).
