Dr. Melanie Ann Ray Ferguson, 80, passed away peacefully at her home in Mobile, AL, on March 5, 2026.
Melanie was born on December 30, 1945, in Mobile. AL. In 1965, she married the love of her life, Ronald “Ron” Ferguson. Together they built a life centered on family and adventure, raising their two sons, Mark and Scott, while moving throughout the United States as Ron pursued his career as a meteorologist in the United States Air Force and later with the National Weather Service.
Throughout those years, Melanie remained deeply committed to education and service. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and worked in a variety of professional settings, helping countless individuals and families. In 1987, the family returned to Mobile, AL, where Melanie established her private psychology practice. She continued serving her patients with compassion, wisdom, and dedication for more than three decades, maintaining her practice until the time of her passing.
Melanie was beloved by her family, friends, and the many patients whose lives she touched. Known for her warm spirit and genuine kindness, she was welcomed by name at her favorite lunch spots around town. Outside of her work, she found great joy relaxing at the beach, tending to her yard and feeding the birds, squirrels, raccoons, and neighborhood cats that gathered regularly in her backyard.
She is survived by her two sons, Mark Ferguson (Andi) of Stone Mountain, GA, and Scott Ferguson (Carla) of Dothan, AL; her grandchildren, Lucille “Lucy” Ferguson of Brooklyn, NY, and Harry Ferguson of Atlanta, GA; her brother, Gary Ray (Anne) of Pleasant Grove, AL; and a brother in law, Cliff Ferguson (Bonnie) of Alabaster, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Janie Ray, and her husband, Ronald “Ron” Ferguson.
Melanie will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to helping others, her deep love for her family, and the warmth and kindness she shared with everyone she met. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
