Michael Owen Hockey, 59, a resident of Orange Beach, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 24, 2025. Michael was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and was the third child and eldest son of Edmund R. and Carol L. Hockey. He grew up with his four siblings in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Michael attended Princess Anne High School, graduating in 1984, and after taking a year off for fun, he attended Virginia Wesleyan College for his undergraduate degree. After graduation, he moved to Alabama where he attended, on scholarship, the University of Southern Alabama, where he obtained his Master's Degree and teaching certificate in mathematics and computer science. He worked for over 25 years at Gulf Shores High School, teaching both subjects while also being very involved with or coaching many of the school’s sports teams.
Preceding Michael in death are his father, Edmund R. Hockey, and brothers-in-law Paul E. Townsend and William B. Robertson, III.
He is survived by his mother, Carol L. Hockey; siblings Laura G. Boltz, Myra J. Townsend, Danielle T. Hockey (William J. Weaver), and Geoffrey J. Hockey (Lee A. Hockey); nieces Patricia A. Townsend, Celia M. Boltz, Ava N. Gonzalez (Antonio J. Gonzalez, Jr); and nephews Andrew Boltz and Nathan P. Hockey, as well as many other loving relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home of Foley in the chapel on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00am. The family will receive friends one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Michael’s name to either The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, or a personal charity of your choice.
