Nancy Lee Henderson

August 9, 1950 — October 20, 2023

Daphne

Nancy Lee Henderson, age 72, died at home with family at her side in Ashland, Virginia, on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Nancy was born August 9, 1950, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of George and Mary (Alderson) Kirk. She attended high school in Pittsburgh and graduated in 1968.

Nancy met and married Michael Hogan in the 1970s, and they had a daughter, Kerry Hogan.

In 1972, she graduated from Edinboro University, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and library science.

A proud Marine, Nancy joined the Marine Corps in 1972 as a second lieutenant. Her service in the Marine Corps spanned groundbreaking times for the Marine Corps. Nancy joined before the end of the draft. Her initial officer training class was the first to have both men and women. Of note, until 1975, women were separated from service for pregnancy. She served for 21 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

At her last assignment, Nancy was the deputy logistics officer for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.  It was there that Nancy found love again and following her retirement, married Jerry on June 15, 1994.  After a brief stint in Saudi Arabia where Jerry worked as a contractor, Nancy and Jerry retired to Alabama. During retirement, Nancy enjoyed playing golf and playing bridge, volunteering with a local women's group, and participating in the Red Hatters.

Nothing made her happier than sharing time with family, friends, and her dogs.

She is survived by her daughter Kerry (Travis Bowden) Hogan, Ashland, VA; stepson Scott Henderson, Montana; stepdaughter Shelley Maxwell, Texas; sister Lisa (Dan) Lynch, Sarver, Pennsylvania; brother Stewart (Jennifer) Kirk, DuBois, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Andrew Bowden and Tesla Anne Maxwell; and many nieces, nephews, and relations.

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her parents, Mary and George Kirk; and her aunt, Bessie Alderson.

Nancy's family held a Celebration of Life at the Semper Fidelis Chapel, Triangle, Virginia, on January 20, 2024.

Kerry Hogan would like to thank the Visiting Angels, specifically Nancy's caregivers Tiffany and Andrea, as well as Hospice of Virginia for their excellent care of her mother. Kerry is also grateful for the love and support shown by her Aunt Lisa, cousin Michelle, and Nancy's friend Doreen for the frequent visits, which brought tremendous joy to Nancy in her final months.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior.

Interment will follow in Jubilee Memorial Gardens
