Raymond Steve Lewis

d. May 25, 2024

Raymond Steve Lewis was 70 years old at the time of his passing to be with his savior Jesus Christ on May 25th, 2024, in Fairhope, AL.  In his retirement he was a resident of Gulf Shores, AL, where he lived with his wife Betty Elaine Lewis. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores, AL where he served faithfully as a deacon and on the shuttle ministry. He was born on May 16th, 1954, in Mobile, AL to Raymond Julius and Joy Godwin Lewis.

Steve spent most of his working life living in Vicksburg, MS while he worked for Mississippi Power which became Entergy.  He began his time in nuclear power with Bechtel Power Corporation as a welding inspector.  Steve worked 25 years with Entergy as a supervisor at Entergy’s corporate headquarters. At Entergy he would receive “Peak Performer” award for the years of 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997 and Entergy’s Premier Award in 2000.  After his retirement from Entergy, he worked for Iddeal Solutions as a Senior Program Engineering consultant.

Steve enjoyed being on the water.  Next to being with his family, fishing was one of his greatest passions. Fishing was the way Steve grew relationships.  He used his love of the water to invest in friends and family growing those relationships. One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather to his 6 grandchildren, who only knew him as Pawpaw.  He enjoyed sharing his love of the water with them, fellowshipping with them, and creating lifelong memories.  They were his greatest pleasure.

Steve also enjoyed his service to the church where he was a deacon and member of the shuttle ministry.  Serving in the shuttle ministry was his opportunity to minister to people who would be attending worship at First Baptist Church.  His shuttle team is the first line of people to greet and create an initial impression of the church.  He enjoyed giving people a great first impression as they came to church. He loved every opportunity to get to know all people.  It didn’t matter whether it was a beautiful coastal day or a downpour, he was going to be there with his golf cart and a friendly smile.   He would faithfully get them to church.

He was preceded in death by His father Raymond Julius Lewis, mother Joy Godwin Lewis, and sister Cheri Lewis Cochran all of Mobile, Alabama.

He is survived by Betty Elaine Lewis, his wife of 51 years, of Gulf Shores, AL.   His daughter Jamie Hogue and her husband Arnie of Zachary, LA and their four children Caden Lewis, Kendall Lewis, Grant Hogue, and Cooper Hogue.  His son Raymond Jerome (Jerry) Lewis and his wife Amanda and their two children Brooke Lewis and Raymond Elijah (Eli) Lewis.

Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores and his four grandsons Caden, Grant, Cooper, and Eli.

Services will be Thursday May the 30th at First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores, AL. Visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am with the memorial services starting at 11 am.
