Richard Prevette Westmoreland, age 88, a resident of Fairhope/Point Clear, AL, since retirement in 1997, died on April 26, 2025, in Daphne, AL. He was born on June 11, 1936, in Thomasville, N.C. After earning engineering and graduate industrial management degrees from N.C. State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he served three years as an Air Force officer.
He next began a business career as an office of several corporations manufacturing a wide variety of goods: from drilling rigs to spacecraft to copper and steel products. In heading international operations for two of these firms, he led managers from several continents to grow businesses. It was an unexpected pleasure for one raised in a small southern town to have the opportunity to work closely with people from diverse countries and cultures. He knew that the majority of humanity has similar desires and that we all respond well to respect, understanding, and the challenge of cooperating to achieve common goals.
In retirement, with his wife, he continued to travel extensively throughout the world. He also served as a tutor and board member of the Eastern Shore Literacy Council and was a volunteer nursing home visitor. He was a founding member of the Fairhope Men’s Discussion Group, an officer of Citizens for Responsible Government, and cofounder and coordinator of the Fairhope World Affairs Roundtable.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Elke Westmoreland; their daughter, Barbara W. Brousseau; granddaughter, Alexandra Brousseau; son-in-law, Pascal Brousseau; and his sister, Mrs. Ellen Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 3:00PM at the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home on Highway 98 in Fairhope. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, since Dick and Elke loved listening to classical music together at MSO concerts, the family suggests that donations be made it their honor to the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, 6 N. Joachim Street, Mobile, AL. 36602.
