Rita Kelly Nelson was born on August 5, 1931 in Mobile, Alabama, and peacefully departed this life on June 4, 2026, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama. She was a beloved figure in her Westminster Village community, remembered for her grace, humor, and  commitment to her family.

Rita was a proud alumna of Bishop Toolen High School and Auburn University. After a stint in Yokosuka, Japan during her husband's military service, she returned to Mobile where she lived most of her life. Later in life she resided for some years in the mountains of Western North Carolina before she and her husband returned to Baldwin County for their retirement years.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Herbert H. Nelson Jr., whose partnership and love were a cornerstone of her life. Together, they nurtured a family that stands as a testament to their shared legacy. The family includes their sons Herbert Nelson III and his wife Drusilla Burns, David Nelson and his wife Sonia, and Kelly Nelson and his wife Debby, and five grandchildren - Nicholas, Drew, Megan, Cameron, and Connor.

Friends and family will gather to honor Rita's life and memory with a visitation and funeral service at Christ the King Catholic Church, located at 1505 Main Street in Daphne, Alabama, on June 9, 2026. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. These moments provide an opportunity for those touched by her warmth and kindness to come together in remembrance.

Following the service, a burial will take place at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, situated at 34904 AL-225 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The interment will begin at 1:00 p.m., offering a final farewell to a woman whose life was marked by love, faith, and resilience.

Rita Kelly Nelson’s legacy is one of devotion to her family and her faith. She leaves behind a family and community full of love, support, and enduring respect, who will carry her spirit forward with deep reverence.
