Sabra Atkins was born Sabra Lucille Stough on March 11, 1932 to George and Mary Allen Stough. She spent her early youth as a resident of Marengo County, Ala. until the family moved to Bay Minette, Ala. She graduated from Baldwin County High School and continued her education at Huntingdon College. She graduated from API with a degree in elementary education in 1954 and went on to earn a master's degree from Troy (State) University in 1983. While at Auburn, Sabra met her true love, George H. She retired in 1988 after 28 years. She continued her passion for teaching even after retirement by volunteering as a reading tutor with the Literacy Council. Sabra was greatly loved and respected in the Spanish Fort community. She remained active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Delta Kappa Gamma, where she held various officer roles throughout the years. She was an active member of Saint Francis Street United Methodist Church for many years, and then the Spanish Fort United Methodist Church and Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church as well.
