In Loving Memory of Sherman Dyess
Resident of Foley, Alabama
July 1, 1941 – June 28, 2025
“The righteous walk in integrity— happy are the children who follow them!” – Proverbs 20:7
Sherman Dyess, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong resident of Foley, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by the love of his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joyce Dyess, whom he married on October 26,1963. Their enduring partnership was rooted in love, respect, and shared purpose, forming the heart of a close-knit family. Sherman was the proud father of two sons, Glenn Dyess (Melenie) and Wayne Dyess (Shannon), both of Daphne, Alabama. His greatest joy came from his five grandchildren - Kayla, Garrett, Jordan, Baleigh, and Alexandra Dyess - each of whom he loved dearly and celebrated with quiet pride. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Schneider of Folsom, California.
Sherman was a man of abiding faith and a long-time, devoted member of the former Elberta Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (now known as Church at the Shores Christian and Missionary Alliance). Anchored in his faith in Christ, he found lasting spiritual grounding, meaningful fellowship, and a guiding sense of purpose that shaped his daily walk and sustained him through every season of life.
Sherman worked for the United States Postal Service for 32 years. Never one to sit idle, Sherman also worked part-time for 60 years at Moyer Ford in Foley, remaining active there until the age of 80. His strong work ethic and dedication were a model to all who worked with him.
Beyond his professional life, Sherman’s dedication to serving others and his community was most evident in his 59 years with the Foley Fire Department - 40 of those as an active volunteer firefighter. He responded to calls at all hours for four decades driven by a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of others rather than any desire for recognition. His fellow firefighters and neighbors respected his sound judgment, strength and kindness.
Though quiet by nature, his life echoed with wisdom that needed no voice. In his presence, others found something to lean on - steadiness, kindness, and a deep sense of responsibility that asked for nothing in return. He showed that strength can be gentle, that leadership can be humble, and that faithful service is reward enough. He found joy not in recognition or status, but in what lasts: his family, his community, and serving others.
He was a dedicated fan and season ticket holder of the University of Alabama football team (Roll Tide!), and a longtime supporter of the Foley Lions (Go Lions!), faithfully attending games each season long after his sons had left the playing field.
A service honoring Sherman’s life will be held at the Eternal Life Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Lillian, Alabama. Interment will follow at the Old Spanish Cemetery in Lillian on Thursday, July 3 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 a.m.
Sherman Dyess will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the dignity with which he lived, the grace he gave without asking, and the devotion he modeled which will continue to guide those who carry his memory forward.
