Stephen McLane Merrick, of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 84.
Stephen was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Louise Balsinger and Hubert Merrick, and built a remarkable life defined by family, dedication, and an extraordinary work ethic. An attorney for more than sixty years, Stephen also spent more than four decades as a corporate executive, serving in roles including CEO, President, CFO, Vice President of Operations, and Vice President of International Development. Though he described himself as “semi-retired,” Stephen continued working until his death. He truly loved his work, and those who knew him will remember the determination, discipline, and tireless work ethic he brought to everything he did.
Outside of his career, Stephen found great enjoyment in gardening and sailing. Although he no longer sailed in his later years, his love for it never left him. Whether tending to his garden, reminiscing about time spent on the water, or devoting himself to his work, he approached life with the same commitment and persistence that became such a defining part of who he was.
Stephen is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Julia Merrick, and his children, Stephanie Blaser, Trevor Merrick, Carolyn Merrick, and Conor Merrick; and his grandson, Kyle Merrick. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Ringer, Priscilla Merrick, and Marcia Donnelly, along with extended family and loved ones who will deeply miss him.
Stephen will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a dedicated professional, and a man whose incredible work ethic remained with him throughout his life. His family will carry forward the memories of his determination, his passions, and the many years of love and life they shared with him.
