Sue Darrington Zundel, nee Aikin, a longtime resident of Mobile and later Montrose, passed away the morning of August 4th, 2025, at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort surrounded by loved ones. She was 82 years old.
A Native of Mobile, Sue graduated from Murphy High School in 1961, later attending Southwestern College at Memphis (today known as Rhodes College) before marrying her high school sweetheart in 1964. They shared 61 years of marriage together and celebrated their anniversary this past June.
After their wedding, Sue later began work in the family’s jewelry store, Zundel’s, in Mobile. For 35 years she oversaw the store’s gift and bridal department and escorted generations of brides through the delicate task of selecting their first china pattern and silver service.
Sue and he husband reared Susan and Robert in Mobile and they all looked forward to the annual migration to summer experiences and adventures at the family home in Point Clear. An avid cook, her seafood recipes would draw friends and family from near and far. Friendships and memories were born and preserved in that wonderful setting.
Sue was a committed member of her church. A lifelong Presbyterian, she grew up in Government Street Church and, after her marriage attended Springhill Church in Mobile then Trinity Church in Fairhope. She was an elder in the latter two churches and served on many related committees.
Sue is survived by her husband, Ferd, children, Robert (Mellisa) Zundel, and Susan (Charles) Ham; four grandchildren, Sawyer, Carson, Katherine, and David, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at the Stockton Memorial Cemetery in Stockton, Alabama on Monday, August 11 at 11:00am. At 3 o’clock on Monday August 11th a celebration of life and faith service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 545 S Mobile Street, Fairhope, AL. 36532.
