Obituary

Sumiko Goley, née China, a woman whose gentle spirit and warm kindness touched the lives of all who knew her, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at her residence in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Born on December 16, 1934, in the serene lands of Okinawa, Japan, Sumiko carried with her the essence of her heritage and the strength of her family's legacy throughout her remarkable journey.

A beacon of kindness and warmth, Sumiko had an extraordinary gift for making others feel at ease with her welcoming nature and wonderful sense of humor. She brought light and laughter into the lives of family and friends alike, always ready with a comforting smile or a playful jest that lifted spirits and fostered closeness among those fortunate enough to be in her presence.

Sumiko’s passions reflected her gentle and thoughtful character. She found deep solace and joy in reading the Bible, drawing strength and inspiration from its teachings. When not immersed in scripture, she enjoyed the quiet challenges of puzzles, engaging her keen mind, and the delicate art of crocheting, through which she expressed creativity and love in every carefully crafted stitch.

Family was the cornerstone of Sumiko’s world. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Linda Jeffery, and son-in-law, Jay Jeffery, who were constant sources of support and companionship. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Veronica Haertling and her husband Kyle Haertling, as well as Valerie Jeffery-Montgomery, each carrying forward the lessons of love and kindness she imparted. Among her greatest joys was her great-grandson, Liam Haertling, whose presence filled her later years with happiness and hope for the future. Sumiko’s sister, Komesu Shizuko, remains a cherished living link to their shared beginnings and the enduring bonds of family.

Sumiko’s journey was preceded by the passing of her beloved husband, David Edward Goley, whose memory remains forever etched in her heart. She was also lovingly reunited in spirit with her parents, China Kamado and China Gensho, and her siblings, China Teiko and Yamashiro Yoshiko, whose guidance and love shaped the foundation of her life.

Her passing leaves a tender void in the hearts of all who knew her, yet her incredible kindness, unwavering faith, and infectious humor continue to inspire and comfort us. Sumiko Goley’s life was a testament to the power of grace and love, and her memory endures like a gentle light—forever illuminating the paths of those she cherished.

As we remember Sumiko, we hold close the warmth she extended so freely, the laughter she sparked so easily, and the unwavering kindness that defined her very being. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit remains deeply woven into the lives of her family and friends, a lasting reminder of a life beautifully lived.

A private funeral service will be held at the gravesite at a later date.
