Thomas Ware Burt

September 13, 1943 — February 29, 2024

Fairhope

Tommy Burt was born at his grandparents’ home in Atmore, Al, on September 13, 1943, to Gladys S. Burt and Harold W. Burt, though Long Beach, MS, was his hometown throughout his youth.  Tom graduated from Long Beach High School in 1961, where he made many lifelong friends.  He then enlisted in the US Army and served at Ft. Hood and Ft. Knox before a two-year assignment at the USAEUR Headquarters in Heidelberg, W. Germany.

Tom and Jean Adam married as teenagers in her hometown of Pass Christian, MS, in July 1962.  During their 61 years of a dedicated and loving marriage, they welcomed two wonderful sons, Thomas W. Burt, Jr., and Adam Heath Burt.  Tom and Heath gave them two beautiful daughters-in-law, Sharyn and Stephanie.  They were then blessed with nine precious grandchildren:  Daphne, TW, Jake, Lauren, Liz, Brooks, Michael, Emily, and Johnathan.

In 1968 Tom earned his BS in Political Science at USM, followed by a JD degree from Ole Miss in 1971. Tom re-enlisted in 1972, serving six years in the JAG Corps.  The family lived in W. Germany and traveled throughout Europe before being transferred in 1975 to the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, where Tom taught in the Department of Law. For the remainder of his career, Tom was an attorney at the US Army Corps of Engineers in Mobile and at the Pentagon. Tom and Jean were fortunate to spend many years of retirement together, delighting in trips to Wyoming and Tom’s favorite—Hawaii.

In addition to his wife, children, and grands, Tom is survived by his cherished brothers-in-law, Warren Adam and Rick Adam, and wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear hometown and military friends who enriched his life immeasurably.

Tom passed away at home in Fairhope, Al, on February 29.  His funeral will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian, MS, on Saturday, March 9.  Visitation will be from 10-11 am, followed by the church service.  Immediately thereafter, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Tom’s Life at the Event Venue, Cat Island Coffeehouse, at the corner of Scenic Drive and Davis Avenue in downtown Pass Christian.
