Tommy Lane Jr., a resident of Daphne, Alabama, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026. He was born in Fountain, Alabama, to the late Tommie Lane Sr. and Mary McNeil Lane.
Tommy grew up in Pollard, Alabama, and graduated from Southern Normal School in Brewton, Alabama. A gifted student, he excelled both academically and athletically. Quiet by nature, Tommy found great joy in music and books, pursuits that reflected his thoughtful and reflective spirit.
From a young age, Tommy dreamed of becoming a United States Marine. In June of 1967, he answered that calling by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. After completing Marine Combat Training, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his second tour, he was decorated for valor and awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.
Tommy went on to serve a long and distinguished 24-year career in the Marine Corps. Throughout his service, he earned numerous medals and commendations for his dedication, leadership, and impactful service. Among his many achievements, he was recognized as the most outstanding senior enlisted leader in the Corps and was presented a trophy by the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He concluded his exemplary military career with his promotion to Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt, E-9) before retiring in July of 1991.
Following his military retirement, Tommy continued his commitment to service and personal growth by earning a master’s degree in Psychology from Troy State University. He then joined the Alabama Department of Pardons and Parole, where he served as a Probation Officer for Conecuh and Monroe Counties for ten years before retiring.
Tommy continued to be active in service, as this was his nature. He was a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart USA (MOPH), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Patriot Guard and the Marine Corps League Jesse Andrews Jr Detachment where he once served as Commandant
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Bellamy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie Lane; children, Tomiko Lane, Colonel LeRon Lane (USMC), Brandon Thomas, and Luke Thomas; grandchildren, Jordan Lane, Jacob Lane, Nahla Thomas, and Noah Thomas; brothers-in-law, George Howell, Kenneth (Mae) Howell, Terry Howell, and Arthur Jennings; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Howell, Synthia Howell, and Sharon Jennings-Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Daphne, Alabama, on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama.
