FULTON SPANISH FORT, AL Walter Robert Fulton, age 85, a resident of Spanish Fort, AL, passed away Saturday, August 5, 2023. Walter was a member of the Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, a graduate of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA in 1960, and a graduate of Gulfport High School, Gulfport, MS in 1956. He was a retired U.S. Army Veteran after serving for 44 years of both active duty and active/inactive reserve duty. He was a member of Sigma Chi Social Fraternity while at LSU, and a member of Uniformed Services Disabled Retirees (USDR), Disabled American Veterans, and Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) later in life. His military service career began when he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of the US Army in May of 1960. He began active duty at Fort Benning, GA, and his service career included Chief of Personnel & Administration, US Army Broadcasting & Visual Activities Pacific, Okinawa; 3 tours in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group and Military Assistance Command Vietnam Special Operations Group (MACVSOG) and the Joint Army-Navy Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta; Deputy Secretary of the General Staff for the Commander United Nations Command and US Forces, Korea; Director of Personnel & Community Activities and later Director of Plans, Training & Security, Fort Sheridan, IL; and his final post was serving as a Deputy Chief, Policy & Special Activities Division, on the personal staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, NATO, at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Brussels, Belgium. After retirement from the US Army, he served for many years in the active/inactive reserves. His military honors include the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit, Korean & Vietnam service ribbons, and the Army Commendation Medal. He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Carolyn Rouse Fulton; his parents Lawrence Powe Fulton and Annie Lou Gray Fulton; two sisters, Nelle O’Neal, and Edith Whitney; and a brother Larry Fulton. Survivors include his daughter Pamela (Bo) Britain of Spanish Fort, AL; four grandchildren, Jack (Anna) McWilliams of Dothan, AL, Sam Britain, Nate Britain, and Ella Britain all of Spanish Fort, AL; a sister, Sylvia “Chibby” Busey of Shreveport, LA; and many other loving relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held at Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, on Saturday, August 19, 2023. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:30am with funeral services immediately following at 11:00am. A private interment will be held at a later date at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Spanish Fort, AL. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, or any other charity of choice.
