William McGinnes (Papa Rocco)
Born on May 30, 1942, in Glasgow, Scotland, William McGinnes passed away on July 16, 2025, at the age of 83. He lived a life defined by perseverance, generosity, service, and a deep appreciation for culture and community. At the age of 12, William emigrated to the United States with his family, embarking on a journey that would lead to personal and professional fulfillment.
William was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served his country with honor. Following his military service, he began a successful career as a mechanical engineer in Michigan, where he met and married the love of his life, Rose. After a 20-year career as a project manager with Modco, the world’s largest cutting tool manufacturer, William and Rose pursued their dream of owning a restaurant. On March 15, 1985, they opened Papa Rocco’s in Gulf Shores, Alabama — a beloved community staple they ran side by side until Rose’s passing on March 12, 2017. William continued to honor their legacy by operating the restaurant for many years after.
William had a lifelong passion for Michigan football and cherished trips back to Michigan to visit family and catch a game. He was also an avid lover of opera, traveling across the country to attend performances. His love for the arts led to a long-standing relationship with the Pensacola Opera, where he was not only a member and generous donor, but also a beloved patron. His contributions to the opera community were so impactful that he was honored with a star outside the Pensacola Saenger Theatre — a lasting tribute to his dedication and support.
William was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca McNeill; his father, Corneilus McGinnes; his stepfather, Malcolm McNeill; his brother, James McGinnes; his stepsisters, Rita Hatcher and June Phillip; and his beloved wife, Rose McGinnes.
He is survived by his nephew, Neil McGinnes, and wife Katie McGinnes; his nieces, Gail Harris and husband Rob, Karen McGinnes, Heather Phillip, and Laurie McPeak; and his sister-in-law, Nan McGinnes. William is also lovingly remembered by his great-nieces, Maegan Harris and Mairi McGinnes; and his great-nephews, Kyle Harris, Tyler Harris, and Malcolm McGinnes.
William McGinnes will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, his unwavering generosity, his service to his country, his deep love of family, and his passion for the arts. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the community he helped build.
