William Charles Phillips, age 76, passed away peacefully in Pensacola, Florida, with his family by his side. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was a proud native of Madison Heights, Michigan.

William honorably served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1972, rising from Private to Military Police. He served in the K9 Unit and completed his military career in Washington, D.C., where he worked as a K9 Instructor ‑ an experience that remained one of the defining and most meaningful chapters of his life. He was honored with multiple accolades from majors, commanders, and even from President Richard Nixon.

After completing his military service, William returned home and committed himself to a long and respected career with the Madison Heights Police Department. Serving the community for over 25 years, he was known for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering sense of duty.

Upon retiring from the police department, William moved to Lillian, Alabama, with Carol, where he continued to serve the community as a member of the Lillian Volunteer Fire Department for several years.

William was preceded in death by his parents, William Phillips and Caroline Lena (Bojorean) Phillips, and by his brother, James M. Phillips.

He is survived by his three daughters: Mary (Ryan) Phillips-Takacs of Madison Heights, Michigan; Jennifer (Tony) Combetta of Madison Heights, Michigan; and Amanda Phillips of Royal Oak, Michigan.

Beloved uncle to his nephew, Zachary Phillips of Lillian, Alabama.

He is also survived by his former wife, Anita Phillips, who, though divorced, remained a lifelong friend.

William was a proud grandfather to Shelby Caroline Phillips, Jordan (Maureen) Takacs, Caty Takacs, Molly Takacs, Maximus William Combetta, Maizie Phillips, and Eden Phillips. He was also the beloved great-grandfather of Mason Takacs and more on the way.

William will be remembered for his integrity, his devotion to service, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. He was known for often working second jobs or running businesses - such as Colorpoint Screen Printing - to ensure his family was always cared for and had every opportunity they desired. His work ethic, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved served as an enduring example for his family and all who knew him.

Outside of spending time with his family at his favorite places, such as the zoo, the movies, and the beach, William enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, coin and stamp collecting, exploring new technology, and staying informed on current events. He especially loved the holidays, playing Santa’s helper, and cherishing special moments with his grandchildren.

William will be cremated and laid to rest in Royal Oak, Michigan. The family will announce burial arrangements in the near future.
